The Review

Vampire Survivors is a survivor-like - a subgenre it effectively invented - where your character auto-attacks and you only control movement. Every 30-second interval, enemies escalate. Every few minutes, you level up and choose new weapons or upgrades. The goal is to survive 30 minutes, by which point you should have evolved multiple weapons into screen-clearing ultimate forms and the experience becomes pure number-go-up satisfaction.

Poncle released Vampire Survivors from Early Access in late 2022 for .99 and launched a genre. By mid-2024, the game had received multiple major DLC expansions (Moonspell, Tides of the Foscari, Emergency Meeting), a free mobile version, and a console release. Each DLC adds new characters, stages, and weapon evolution trees. The base game alone has enough content to sink 20+ hours; with all DLC, completionists report 80+ hours.

Vampire Survivors works because the game loop is perfectly calibrated: early runs feel desperate, mid-game runs feel powerful, and late-game evolved runs feel transcendent. The game's visual presentation is intentionally retro and rough - but this was a design decision that freed Poncle to iterate rapidly and ship content at a pace most studios can't match. The Emergency Meeting DLC - an Among Us crossover - is genuinely hilarious and also surprisingly well-integrated mechanically.

+ THE GOOD

  • The auto-attack design is accessible to literally anyone - no mechanical skill required to enjoy
  • Enormous content volume for the price, with multiple substantial paid DLC expansions
  • The power escalation curve from desperate early game to screen-clearing late game is perfectly tuned

− THE BAD

  • Zero narrative or world-building - pure systems, no context
  • After a few hours, individual runs start to blur together without intentional build variety
  • Some players find the passive auto-attack design boring rather than relaxing - it's a fundamental preference split
