The Review

Dredge released in March 2023 from New Zealand studio Black Salt Games and became an immediate critical favorite. You play a fisherman who arrives at a remote archipelago and slowly uncovers its Lovecraftian secrets. During the day, you fish, upgrade your boat, and complete quests for island residents. At night, the sea becomes something else - creatures emerge from the water, fog obscures the map, and your captain's sanity frays.

The fishing minigame - a spatial puzzle where differently shaped fish must fit into your hold's grid - is simple but tactile in a satisfying way. The tension between staying out late to fill your hold versus docking before darkness falls creates genuine decision pressure. The world is divided into five distinct biomes, each with its own visual palette and monster types, and the environmental storytelling across the archipelago is quietly excellent.

The Iron Rig DLC expanded the world with an offshore rig setting and new machinery-themed narrative that complemented the base game well. At 12 hours for the main story, Dredge respects your time and ends before overstaying its welcome. The horror is atmospheric rather than jump-scare driven - the game understands that what lurks beneath is scarier than what's shown. Few games this budget have this much tonal confidence.

+ THE GOOD

  • Atmospheric dread is built through systems and time pressure, not cheap scares
  • Grid-based fishing inventory creates tactile satisfaction without complexity
  • Respects player time - complete, self-contained story in 12 hours

− THE BAD

  • Boat movement can feel sluggish, especially when navigating narrow passages at night
  • Combat is entirely absent - some players want to fight back against the dark creatures
  • Story resolution is abrupt; the ending lands but leaves some threads unaddressed
