The Review

Blue Prince launched in April 2025 and became a slow-burn word-of-mouth hit. You inherit a mysterious estate and attempt to reach the 46th room, but the mansion's layout is random each run - you draft rooms from a hand of cards, spending resources to unlock doors deeper into the building. It sounds like a conventional roguelite but plays more like a logic puzzle that reveals its true nature over many sessions.

The deeper secret of Blue Prince is that reaching Room 46 is just the beginning. The game has layers of hidden puzzles, cryptic notes, and environmental storytelling that extend well beyond the surface objective. Players who keep notes and pay attention to repeating symbols and room behaviors find a second game buried inside the first. The community puzzle-solving aspect - sharing discoveries online - became a significant part of the experience.

The main frustration is the randomness. Some runs end in the first five rooms due to unfavorable drafts, and the disconnect between player skill and run success can feel unfair when you're deep in a promising attempt. The art is understated - functional rather than stunning. But for players who love systems-driven mystery and the feel of genuine discovery, Blue Prince is exceptional.

+ THE GOOD

  • Layers of hidden puzzles reward players who pay close attention across many runs
  • The 'real game' reveal mid-playthrough is a genuinely memorable moment
  • Community puzzle-solving created a shared discovery experience unlike most releases

− THE BAD

  • Bad drafts can end promising runs through no fault of the player
  • Art style is deliberately muted - may feel bland to players expecting visual spectacle
  • Slow to explain its own systems; early sessions can feel opaque
