The Review
Balatro released in February 2024 and became one of the year's surprise hits, reaching over 500,000 sales in its first week and maintaining a large active player base a year later. The concept is deceptively simple: you play poker hands against escalating chip targets, using a deck of cards modified by Jokers - special cards that stack multipliers in increasingly wild ways. The complexity emerges entirely from the interactions between systems rather than from any individual rule.
What makes Balatro exceptional is the feeling of discovering a broken build. Finding a combination of Jokers that multiplies a four-of-a-kind into eight-digit chip counts isn't just satisfying - it feels like you've broken a math problem in the best possible way. Each of the eight decks starts with different rules, and the Joker pool of 150+ cards means that no two runs feel the same. The game has a remarkable ability to create moments that feel simultaneously lucky and deserved.
The mobile version released in late 2024 and translated surprisingly well - the UI scales cleanly and the pick-up-put-down nature of runs fits mobile perfectly. Localthunk, the solo developer, received GOTY nominations from multiple outlets. The game received an age rating controversy in some regions due to its poker imagery, which was quickly resolved. At .99, it is one of the best value propositions in recent gaming.
