The Review

Animal Well released in May 2024, published by Bigmode, and was developed entirely by one person - Billy Basso - over six years. The result is a Metroidvania where every pixel feels intentional. You're a small creature hatched from an egg in a cave world filled with passive, ambient animals - and something stalking you. The tone is simultaneously cozy and unsettling, the pixel art is dense with hidden information, and the item toolkit is the most creative in the genre.

The surface game - completing the main areas and finding the primary collectibles - takes about 8 hours. But Animal Well has documented layers: Layer 1 is the standard completion, Layer 2 involves puzzles hidden within puzzles that require careful environmental observation, and Layer 3 is secrets so deeply embedded that it took the collective effort of thousands of online players months to uncover. Some of these secrets involve pixel-level manipulation of the game's physics that seem impossible to discover accidentally.

The game has no text, no tutorial, and no hand-holding - everything is communicated through environmental design and player experimentation. This is both its greatest strength and the primary reason some players bounce off it. Basso's visual design is extraordinary: the way light sources, water reflections, and background depth create parallax in a pixel art game is technically impressive. Animal Well is the kind of game made possible only by one obsessive person who spent six years on every detail.

+ THE GOOD

  • Secret layers extend the game far beyond its 8-hour surface - Layer 3 is genuinely extraordinary
  • Every item has multiple non-obvious uses - discovery is constant and rewarding
  • Visual design is among the most technically accomplished pixel art in modern gaming

− THE BAD

  • No text or guidance - newcomers may feel completely lost without community resources
  • The deepest secrets are effectively multiplayer puzzles requiring community coordination to solve alone
  • Combat is minimal and deliberately non-empowering - you are small and fragile
